This is not a career change for me but an upgrade of skills. I'd been in the Information Technology for 16.5 years although not on the web field. I had been doing Object Oriented Design and Development for over 13 years now. Smalltalk is the language we used for development. The Investments and Mortgage applications that we developed are for employees on the financial and mortgage centers. My first profession after graduating college with the degree of BS in Mathematics major in Actuarial Science was an instructor in Math. While teaching math classes, I was approached by the Dean of College of Science of the University of Santo Tomas to study MS in Teaching Computer Science at the de la Salle University in order for the university to be able to open BS Computer Science. I was the first Computer Coordinator at the university and responsible for opening the degree in BS Computer Science. I left the position when my petition to come over here in America was approved. I taught math and computer classes for a total of 7 years. When I came here in America, I was lucky enough to land on a job at Washington Mutual as Programmer Analyst I. I had been promoted to Programmer Analyst II after a year, then to Sr. Programmer Analyst I, Sr. Programmer Analyst II, Technical Specialist II and lastly Sr. Software Developer. I was laid off at Washington Mutual after 16.5 years of service when the bank was bought by JP Morgan Chase. After 3 months of being laid off, I decided to study at SCCC. This is my 6th quarter here. The web work that I been doing in my classes turned out what I expected with the given time and load I carried per quarter. The teachers are great that they give assignments that are industry related. I started in the Database Administration & Development program. But looking at the requirements for Programming, there is only a slight difference. So, I decided to take also the classes for Programming. Since, the job market is still not recovering at the speed that it should be, I decided to push through taking web development classes. Currently, I'm taking 2 classes for web design aside from the last 2 required classes for web development. My goals at this time are to finish at least 3 certificates (Database Administration & Development, Programming & Web Development) and to land a job as Software Engineer or Application Programmer and be able to apply mostly of the skills that I acquired during my studies at Seattle Central Community College. I enjoy nature and love to travel. During my free time, I play WII with my 2 kids and my husband. |
